This position as a Medical Technologist (QC Microbiology) is located in the Microbiology Section of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The incumbent is assigned more complex and specialized duties beyond providing patient test results or routine QC. Assignments may include laboratory test development or modification, method validation/performance evaluation, and team leader for QC within Microbiology Department. The incumbent serves as a resource for quality control issues, and advises on various aspects of quality control including appropriateness that takes into consideration clinical context and the effect of quality control on patient testing.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
Modifies or adapts new methods or techniques to improve or expand services.
Develops protocols for performance of tests and evaluation of results.
Assists the supervisor in preparation of the CAP and other regulatory inspections.
Assists in evaluating and implementing the use of new methodologies in the microbiology section for proper QC.
Responsible for reviewing media and reagent quality control performed in microbiology. Detects and investigates out-of-range quality control, and reports the findings to the section supervisor.
Provides guidance and technical direction necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit or team, in the area of quality control.
Responsible for monitoring tests analyses through quality control to ensure acceptable levels of performance.
Recognizes methodology limitations such as interference, sensitivity, and specificity and considers these when drawing conclusions about the validity of testing results.
Identifies training needs appropriate for the type and complexity of the laboratory services performed. Instructs technical staff on QC parameters. Possesses knowledge of instructional techniques to instruct newly hired technologists in proper performance of tests and applications of the procedures.
The specialist contributes to the development of QC.
Responsible for checking and completing daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual QC.
Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and assay procedures; performs additional tests to resolve any QC issues; and recognizes abnormal results which require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly.
Ensures the section meets its performance measures. Ensures activities associated with process improvement, customer service, data driven decision making, or team driven change are accomplished.
