The position is located at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center. The position serves as a Medical Technician for Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service and reports directly to the Laboratory supervisor. ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include: Performing collection of blood samples of adequate volume and collection in correct tube. Ensuring collection of blood samples is done using the correct order of tube draw. Performing labeling of patient specimens in the presence of patient and uses at least two unique identifiers. Ensuring patients have properly prepared for tests (fasting, special diet, medication, etc.). Instructing patients on proper specimen collection techniques and provides patients with all necessary specimen collection equipment and containers. Promptly responding to STAT draws. Providing aid when a patient has a reaction to phlebotomy procedure. Packaging specimens for shipment following Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines. Preparing samples for testing in the various clinical labs, such as labeling, centrifugation, decanting, aliquoting, etc. Cleaning and restocking the blood collection room/areas. Performing other related duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Work Schedule: Days with rotating schedule of 3:00pm to 11:00pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Financial Disclosure Report: Not Required
