This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. This position serves as a supervisory medical technologist for off tour shifts in the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System and is located in the pathology and laboratory medicine service. In addition to bench technologist duties, the incumbent is responsible for the full range of technical and administrative duties in the Core Laboratory and Blood Bank, for evening and night shift seven days per week. This position will serve as technical and administrative supervisor for subordinates. Will perform moderate and high complexity manual and automated analysis on a variety of biological specimens, including but not limited to, blood, urine, and body fluids, and maintains competency on all off tour benches across Core Laboratory and Blood Bank. This position is responsible for ensuring adequate staffing for evening and night shift seven days per week, including providing coverage, where and when needed to include weekend tours. Will complete timely annual performance evaluations for all subordinate staff and provide professional technical expertise and guidance to subordinates to include assisting with unusual analytical problems. Supervisory Technologist. The incumbent has full supervisory responsibility for smaller, less complex laboratories or laboratories having no GS-11 positions subordinate to the supervisor. Employees in this assignment perform the full range of supervisory duties for one or more sections of the laboratory, including responsibility for assignment of work performed; performance evaluations; recommendations for appointment, awards, advancement and disciplinary actions; identification of continuing education and training needs. The individual ensures compliance with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements; establishes and monitors the quality of the pre-analytical processes as part of the overall laboratory quality management program, and initiates corrective action. This individual will develop policies and procedures, manage document control, develop performance standards, position descriptions and functional statements. Responsible for professional and administrative management of an assigned area, to include budget execution, orientation and competency assessment of assigned staff. The supervisor will maintain effective interdepartmental relations with other services in order to accomplish medical center goals.
