Assistant Laboratory Director position in the Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)

The Department of Genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is recruiting a full-time faculty member to serve as an Assistant Director of the Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory, which is a part the UAB health system clinical laboratories. The UAB health system clinical laboratories provide clinical services to the UAB University hospital, Children’s of Alabama (COA) hospital, and other Birmingham area hospitals.  U.S. News & World Report recently ranked UAB University hospital among the top 30 hospitals in the nation and once again the #1 hospital in Alabama.

The Department of Genetics is seeking an outstanding laboratory geneticist who possesses a broad range of experience in cytogenetics and molecular diagnostics. Our laboratory performs cytogenetic and molecular cytogenomic testing for both constitutional and neoplastic disorders using conventional chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and chromosomal microarray (CMA) analysis.  Our laboratory works closely with the Molecular Genetics laboratory and with clinical laboratories in the Department of Pathology.  The UAB Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory is home to an ACGME accredited American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) training program in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics (LGG) in collaboration with the Molecular Genetics Laboratory.

Responsibilities of this position will include oversight and direction of the day-to-day operations of the Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory. The faculty candidate will work closely with other cytogenetics laboratory directors to:

• Review, interpret and sign-out of clinical cases on a daily basis
• Oversee adherence to technical laboratory procedures and policies as well as assist in troubleshooting of technical problems
• Provide consultation to healthcare professionals and clients regarding test utilization and interpretation
• Develop and validate new tests
• Oversee compliance with regulatory agencies
• Review laboratory data and reports
• Contribute to faculty teaching responsibilities, including teaching in didactic genetics courses and mentoring LGG and Molecular Genetic Pathology (MGP) fellows as well as medical genetics and pathology residents

Although this position is clinical in nature, there are opportunities to develop a collaborative or independent clinical translational research program with clinicians and investigators within the Departments of Genetics and Pathology or other investigators and clinical scientists throughout the UAB School of Medicine.  Academic rank and salary will be based on qualifications and experience.

Requirements for this clinical faculty position include:

• An MD, MD/PhD, or PhD in a Life Science discipline with board certification from the ABMGG in Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics OR Laboratory Genetics and Genomics (LGG)
• Two years of post ABMGG fellowship experience is preferred but not mandatory
• Strong interest in hematologic malignancies and solid tumor oncology
• The ability to function independently and as a member of a collaborative team
• Attention to detail and strong writing skills
